Sandra Bowkett Albert Hall Central Museum Jaipur India

On a recent visit to architectually impressive Albert Hall I took note of an information board at the entrance to the collections. There was much debate as to the use of this building and eventually it was designated a museum. In 1883 Dr Thomas Holbein Hedley mounted an exhibtion at Albert Hall of regional crafts. 'To promote preserve and inspire artisans thereby protecting preserving and reviving skills and providing greater employment for artisans.' As I wandered the corridors full of objects… Continue

Kevin Murray New Zealand represents half the world

The American Craft Council has just finished its Creating a New Craft Culture, which included 'over 315 attendees from cities throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, and England.' Two questions. First, is craft an Anglo thing? Second, which New Zealander represented our half of the world? Continue

Kevin Murray Public Mural on Rented Ghetto Wall

Well, it might not be craft strictly, as an object in itself, but it is certainly a form of applied art. And it's definitely something in our South. Chilean artist Claudio Torres has developed a wonderful project in a ghetto of

Pat Jewett Full Time Crafters

Ok, so I want to turn my craft into a full time job, but I have one big concern. What do you do about getting medical insurance/short term health/dental insurance? Is there a way to get group rates when you are on your own? Join a guild or something? I do relief carvings for things like headboards for beds, mantles,… Continue

Kevin Murray Interested in going to South Korea for the Craft Biennale?

The Korean Craft Biennale have contacted Craft Talk to see if anyone would be interested to give a presentation or demonstrate their work at this year's event. They can cover meals and accommodation, but you'll have to organise the travel fare yourself. Let me know if you are interested. It seems like a good opportunity and it would be great to have someone there to report on what is happening. Continue

Continue

Kevin Murray Pablo Fanque

Looks like the jewellery outlet 'Pablo Fanque - modern accoutrement by artisans' is closely its Sydney store. It seems to have lasted less than a year? What is it about Sydney that causes these outlets to come and go so quickly? Do they misjudge the market, or is it simply more fickle? How do other outlets, like Metallab, avoid this problem? Continue

Kevin Murray Fancy a trip to East Timor?

The East Timor Women's Association are organising another of their weaving tours to the island. You can find out more details here. There's two places left for artists or weavers and they leave mid-July. They travel to the Lou Tem in the south-east, which is a stronghold for traditional tais weaving. Apparently from the local mountain you can see the lights of Darwin. It could be quite an experience. Continue
