New Zealand represents half the world

The American Craft Council has just finished its Creating a New Craft Culture, which included 'over 315 attendees from cities throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, and England.'

Two questions. First, is craft an Anglo thing? Second, which New Zealander represented our half of the world?

Public Mural on Rented Ghetto Wall

Well, it might not be craft strictly, as an object in itself, but it is certainly a form of applied art. And it's definitely something in our South. Chilean artist Claudio Torres has developed a wonderful project in a ghetto of

Fashion photos from Guatemala

You'll notice that a new member from Guatemala has posted some images of his fashion designs. Do they exploit women? I have asked him to explain these images so we can be better judges of that. Let's wait to see what he says.

Adventures among the Bat People

Cheryl Adam has posted a riveting story about her recent experience on return to the Philippines. It's an extraordinary read. I think it conveys some of the intensity involved in these kinds of craft collaborations. It stands as a warning for those… Continue

Wacko!, just got rung up by the owner of a swishy Italian resteruant in Seoul, asking for me to display some of my plastic crochet works and plastic pojagi on their walls. Must race over there after school. Just started a new piece following a traditional Korean wrapping pattern, but in pink and green plastic bags, think it will look very dynamic. The traditional patterns are usually completed in silk or linen, so my work looks very different, but follows the principals of design and symmetry of pojagi. Discovered a fantastic shop in behind the University area of Hyewa called Damul arts. All musty and knick-knacks. but the little lady is a master of Tepuri and pojagi. Tempuri is a traditional skill with silk threads wrapt over balls. Her pojagi was beautiful and I bought a small sample of her work in silk, I also bought some Japanese pojagi needles, rather expensive but worth it as on the packet cover it reads, "needles of love " Can't make work fast enough today, school work wized past with making lion faces for concert "in the Jungle" (played a hundred versions on youtube to kids.) they were crazy with excitment. Then made hundreds of cut out masks for Halloweeen on Thursday, Kids design and colour their own mask from the template. Nearly getting RSI again from scissor cutting, Phew, and its only 11 o'clock !

Hi, great how life brings along opportunitites and new connections. Sitting on the subway this am, (my studio) doing my plastic bag crochet deep in my own world, when a dear old korean lady comes over and starts talking to me in Korean and then takes the crochet hook out of my hand and starts doing some of my work! Wonderful connection with another culture, were shared spoken language is just not important, the sharing, watching and enjoying each others company is far more rewarding. Then I came to school, I work as an art teacher at an International school, and there is an email from you, Kevin, you made my Friday ! suddenly I feel so good and connected. thanks for contacting me Looking forward to browsing thru site and reading articles, anna

Thanks Kevin,
Will contribute soon, however in the middle of putting exhibition together in Doha... and reason for initially signing up is to get in contact with Grace Cochrane as we have lost her email address.

I do look forward to reading through the site [when time permits] as Colin Reaney and I are repatriating to Australia at the end of the month, and need to update ourselves on what is happening back home!
Thanks again
Cheers

Hi Kevin, My name is Terri Brandstater, I am member of the Corrigin Creative Arts Club in WA and we are about to celebrate our centenary year. We would like to make a multi media wall hanging, depicting arts and crafts in Australia through the hundred year period 1913 – 2013, I am attempting to gather information about which arts and crafts where popular when i.e. 1913 – 1923, 1923 – 1933 etc. can you help me, by referring me to relevant websites, books, magazines, people. We have many talented people here including porcelain painters, artist, potters, quilters, writers, people who do hand embroidery, punch work embroidery, cottage crafts, knitting, crocheting, sewing and cottage crafts. We intend to involve everyone in the creation of this wall hanging and will have workshops to share ideas and decide on the design. As mentioned the theme is “The history of arts and crafts 1913-2013”. I hope you can help us. Thank you, kind regards Terri B

Lookig forward to catching up soon

the wombat is just playing with plastic which i love...I am probably out of my depth in this site Kevin but am always interested in the diff, and why we differentiate between art and craft. I love aboriginal cave painting and know that it served a purpose but does that make it craft or art? I noticed while watching the doco about Quai branly that they do not distinguish between the two...surely one persons craft is anothers art.....lets start a new movement were any object can be art if we want it too...lol cheers anna
