Aim:
To review the needs and opportunities of craftspeople in the Pacific, to develop skills and product design and to consider and discuss the current and the future national and international markets.
Objectives:
• To discover new approaches to designing craft
• To learn about contemporary craft development whilst maintaining traditional practices
• To create a network for sharing ideas
• To identify and develop broader selling markets both regionally and internationally
• Professional pathways - to support and mentor artists
Speakers:
• Dr Kevin Murray, Adjunct Professor RMIT University, representative of the World Craft Council and online editor of Journal of Modern Craft
• Joycelin Leahy from Beyond Art, Beyond Pacific Art and Pacific Arts Alliance, in addition she has traded in tribal crafts and contemporary arts from PNG and the Pacific for over 20 years.
• Talei Goater from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, who is currently working on the Facilitating Agricultural Commodity Trade Project and is working with enterprise to facilitate their access to the export market.
Participants: Applicants should consist of a selection of key crafts people that are both practitioners and community leaders. Arts managers should also be present. These individuals will then be responsible for taking the information and lessons learnt and distributing them back to their local communities and countries.
